 What is Critical Thinking ?

Critical thinking is the analysis of available facts, evidence, observations, and arguments in order to form a judgement by the application of rational, sceptical, and unbiased analyses and evaluation.

Critical thinking refers to the higher-order thinking of evaluating and analysing according to Bloom's Taxonomy. 



Characteristics of Critical Thinking :-

1. Active listening.
2. Curiosity
3. Self-discipline
4. Humility

 

1. Active listening:

Ways of practising active listening:

  • Listen to understand
  • Ask deeper questions
  • Avoid interruptions
  • Withhold judgements
  • Train mind
  • Slow down and practise silence
  • Take non verbal cues


 

2. Curiosity :

When we are curious, the brain is primed to learn retain information because it trains our brain to think critically.




3. Self-discipline :

To think critically we should have the self disciplined on taking actions. We should not come to immediate conclusions and actions. We should take more time to acquire information and know the facts.


 

4. Humility :

  • Humility is the opposite of arrogance.
  • Being open minded and receptive to new ideas.
  • Enables seeing information without being filtered through one's ego.
  • Stepping out from comfort zones.

How can we practise critical thinking ?

First we should clarify the problem and then should ask more questions on the problem to get more information. According to the information obtained,then we can analyse all the aspects of the problem. 

In class group activity: 

Discuss the solutions that can be hand-over to the Sri-Lankan cricket board to improve the quality of cricket.

Our group contains 8 members. First we clarified the problem according to the different opinions of our team members. Team members expressed their different ideas on cricket according to their knowledge about cricket.Then we started to analyse the problem. Why and how it happened? There were different answers. Group members gave many answers.Their major opinion was the former players and former captains should responsible for that.
